Dollar higher against other currencies

LONDON -- The dollar was mostly higher against other major currencies in European trading Wednesday. Gold fell.

The euro was quoted at $1.2520 in late European trading, down from $1.2544 late Tuesday. Later, in midday trading in New York, the euro traded at $1.2532.

Other dollar rates in Europe, compared to late Tuesday, included 105.60 Japanese yen, up from 105.37; 1.2528 Swiss francs, up from 1.2492; and 1.3344 Canadian dollars, down from 1.3359.

The British pound was quoted at $1.8301, down from $1.8364.

In midday trading in New York, the dollar bought 105.60 yen, and the pound was worth $1.8307.

Gold dealers in London fixed a recommended price of $399.70 bid per troy ounce, down from $400.90 late Tuesday.

In Zurich the bid price was $398.73, down from $401.20.

Gold fell $1.70 in Hong Kong to $399.55.

Silver closed in London at $6.14 bid per troy ounce, up from $6.12.
